OLD MISSION Real Estate & Homes for Sale

Old Mission Peninsula is a civil township of Grand Traverse County, Michigan. It has a population of 6,068 as of the 2020 US Census. It is coterminous with the Peninsula Township, also known as The Peninsula or simply The Pen.

The Old Mission Peninsula is unique—in fact one of Michigan’s most interesting and scenic townships—because of its finger-like shape that projects about 16 miles into Grand Traverse Bay.

It is home to plenty of parks and natural areas including the Pelizzari Natural Area, Bowers Harbor Park, Bowers Harbor Park Expansion, Haserot Beach and Boat Launch, Archie Roadside Park, Lighthouse Park, and Old Mission State Park.

These parks are still open today despite the COVID-19 stay-at-home directive. Visitors may still enjoy the beautiful sights that these parks have to offer as long as they maintain social distancing and follow health protocols.

This narrow finger of land stretching into the center of Grand Traverse Bay, named a Scenic Heritage Route in 2007, is full of sights, sceneries, and culture. There are hiking trails, beaches, fields of grapevines and trees, cozy inns, and antique shops that visitors can’t get enough of. Old Mission is also a fantastic place to live.

If you walk five miles in this lovely Michigan township you might find about 10 wineries along the way. Most of them have a stunning water view and live music to keep you enthralled. You can purchase by the glass or have a traditional tasting while enjoying the scenery. What you need to know about Old Mission is that wine is deeply engraved into the culture.

Old Mission also has cozy inns like the Chateau Central and historical sites like the Mission Point Lighthouse. There are restaurants and dining establishments that are frequently described as some of Michigan’s “hidden gems”. There are plenty of things to do and sights to see in Old Mission.

Work with Amber Cyman today to find the home of your dreams in Old Mission.

There are certain qualities you need to look for in a real estate agent, especially if you want to buy a real estate property in Old Mission. Interviewing your prospects is usually a good idea, but finding the right real estate agent is easier said than done.

In order to choose the best agent for your real estate needs, you need to consider factors like how long they have been licensed and how many deals they have closed.

Experience matters, especially when it comes to real estate. You want a buyer’s agent who is familiar with the ins and outs of the industry, so they can give you proper advice throughout the process. Whether you are buying or selling a property in Old Mission, they can walk you through it and help you handle any problem that you may encounter along the way.

When it comes to real estate properties in Old Mission, it pays to have a real estate agent who is really familiar with the area. Your agent should know the area well enough to give you the answers for some of your most important questions. They need to know about nearby school districts, universities, shopping centers, hospitals, etc. This could make a big difference in your decision-making process as you look for a property to buy. The more information you can get, the better.

Ideally, you want a real estate agent who is active in the industry. Ask them about how many transactions they have done so far within the year. Although the actual number doesn’t matter, you can get an idea of how well they are doing at keeping their business consistent.

Finally, you need a real estate agent who is available when you need them. Agents need to be available during business hours to manage the logistics of your real estate transaction. Real estate is a tough business when it comes to the hours. Most of the time, agents also have to be available after work hours to meet with clients. A good agent will make sure they are available when you need them so they can handle problems that may arise during the transaction.

Don’t just take your agent’s word for it. You can easily find testimonials online from clients they have worked with in the past. This is one of your most reliable sources of information when it comes to real estate agents.

Amber Cyman, for example, consistently receives positive feedback from her clients, which you can read about online. This gives you an idea on how effective she is when it comes to helping her clients secure their dream homes. Here are a few of those testimonials about Amber Cyman:

“Amber is hands down the best realtor we’ve ever worked with! Buying a home is so hard when there’s so much competition but with her work ethic there’s nothing really that stands in her way. She works tirelessly and will fight for you every step of the way and she really has your best interest at heart. She’s honest with telling you everything that is wrong with any home and has a great amount of local knowledge to find you the most perfect home. I could go on and on but bottom line is just get her to represent you and you won’t be sorry. She’s the best of the best!”

-Natasha Hegarty bought a single family home in 2019 for approximately $300K in Traverse City, MI 49684-

Another testimonial is from a user named DavidRhine7, who bought and sold a home in 2017 in Traverse City, Michigan:

“We took 2 years to find the house of our dreams and Amber was with us every step of the way. We had a tough price point and some high standards but Amber took our challenge and made it an amazing experience. If there was ever a listing that came up, it didn’t matter what time a day Amber would send it. With no reservation and with the highest regard – there is only one call you should make when trying to find a house and that’s to Amber Cyman. Finding a house is a process, you have the beginning stages, finding your house, closing, and then after closing. It has taken me a year to write this but even to this day Amber still cares and asks us how everything is going. You will Not find a better realtor.”

Amber Cyman was voted 2019 Traverse Magazine “Red Hot 10 Best Realtors” for Northern Michigan. She has also received the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards from Real Estate One. But as Amber herself will tell you, awards don’t mean everything when it comes to real estate.

What’s more important is Amber’s passion for homes and for helping people find an investment property for their dream home. The awards and the recognition are just the cherry on top.

Amber Cyman is also very active within the community in groups such as Immaculate Conception PAC, Child Family Services, and Harvest MOPS group.

Amber loves to negotiate for home sellers. She knows the importance of being well-prepared so she could defend her clients against low ball offers. 1. Sip Along a Wine Trail

You’ll find 10 wineries within a 5-mile radius, most with stunning water views, light snacks and regular live music, with options for a traditional tasting or purchase by the glass and the chance to sit and enjoy the scenery. The narrow peninsula, hilly terrain and surrounding waters help stave off early frosts and cold spring temperatures prevent premature spring budding. This makes a microclimate perfect for producing Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and ice wines.

  1. Dive into History

The Rev. Peter Dougherty is credited with planting the area’s first cherry tree on the peninsula in 1852. It flourished, and others followed suit, planting the area’s first commercial orchard (40 years later) on the same spot. You’ll find cherries in abundance at roadside farm stalls; you can also take an audio tour to explore the house the vicar built in 1842 and imagine what the peninsula looked like many years ago, then walk the nearby hiking trail. Explore Log Church, a replica of the mission and school for Chippewa Indians, then head to the tip of the peninsula to the beautiful Mission Point Lighthouse, built in 1870. There are also exhibits, walking trails, and a beach here. Those wanting more historical immersion can sign up as a light keeper.

  1. Stay at a Cozy Inn

You’ll get bay views from the rooms, breakfast and wine tasting (and not worry about a ride) when you stay at the inns of both Chateau Grand Traverse and Chateau Chantal, both elegantly equipped and with access to common areas with cozy fireplaces. Brys Estate rents a full house on its vineyard, and there are also several B&B options on the peninsula. For a Tuscan experience, try Gray Hare Inn Vineyard Bed & Breakfast, an old-fashioned Italian B&B known for its gourmet cuisine, vineyard views, and the occasional boules, or opt for the sprawling Old Mission Inn for its water view and story; the inn was built in 1869 and has hosted famous guests such as Babe Ruth and Joe Louis over the years.

  1. Dine on Local Cuisine

Called one of Michigan’s “hidden gems,” Old Mission, with casual to special waterfront occasions, there’s an option to suit almost any mood. For a special occasion – or just to celebrate the view – head to The Boathouse Restaurant on the Bowers Harbor shoreline and in the summer ask for a table on the deck and watch the sun set over the bay before hitting the slow takes way home. The cottage-style setting of Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant, Brewery and Distillery shares a building with the more upscale Mission Table, and at both you can enjoy their popular breweries and spirits. If you like art with your lunch, Old Mission Tavern brings the European gallery-within-a-tavern tradition to Michigan, showcasing the work of more than 100 artists and menu offerings such as almond crusted whitefish and homemade cobbler.

5.Explore a Local Market

Across the peninsula, vineyards alternate with cherry orchards, apple trees and swaying lavender fields. Beyond Chateau Grand Traverse, you’ll find the fruits of generations of farming sold at colorful roadside farm stalls. The Downtown Farmers Market is full of local produce and fares worth exploring. Pick your own dessert treasures at Buchan’s Blueberry Hill (blueberries, apples, peaches, and more) or Santucci Farm (cherries). Shop for everything lavender amid Provençal-style fields at The Secret Garden on Brys Estate, and Old Mission Flowers has a self-service cutting garden.

6. Find Hidden Gems and Antiques

The Old Mission General Store has antiques – you might find a Civil War uniform over a reproduction coon cap, not far from the impressive selection of wines from around the world. The store is antique in its own right as the first store between Fort Way and Mackinac (then a wig-wam), and is where Henry Ford installed the state’s second-ever gas station. For more antiques, head up Nelson Road off the M-37 towards Old Barn Antiques for vintage clothing, crockery, gas pumps and other treasures. Bella Galleria in the Old Mission Tavern displays the work of some 100 artists and Tinker Studio offers traditional art, artisan gifts and decorative paper. It also offers art classes in various techniques.

Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant, Brewery, Distillery

The Jolly Pumpkin, Restaurant, Brewery, and Distillery Traverse City, is historically situated among the generous cherry orchards and distinguished lakes of northern Michigan. Inspired by natural surroundings, our esteemed restaurant and brewery offers a rustic atmosphere marked by fireside warmth and earthy woods in a comfortable cottage like setting.

Boathouse Restaurant

Nestled on the shores of beautiful Bowers Harbor the Boathouse takes full advantage of its delightful view of the docks and bay with wide-open windows and a summer deck. Indoors, the charming decor invokes a relaxed cottage atmosphere where both the casually and formally attired feel welcome.

Mission Table

For years, we were known fondly as Bowers Harbor Inn. In spring 2010, we officially reopened as Mission Table at Bowers Harbor Inn. We still hold true to the basic ideology that made us one of Michigan’s most highly regarded culinary destinations for decades.

Mission Table

Old Mission Tavern

Situated on beautiful Old Mission Peninsula in Northwestern Michigan, surrounded by the crystal clear blue waters of Lake Michigan, and in the midst of orchards, vineyards, and farmland, the Old Mission Tavern provides a beautiful relaxing dining experience in an inspirational setting.

Old Mission Tavern

Although Whitewater Township does not have a community police officer (CPO) contract with the GTSO, they are still the main law enforcement agency for Whitewater Township.

The B+ grade means the rate of crime is lower than the average US city. Old Mission is in the 71st percentile for safety, meaning 29% of cities are safer and 71% of cities are more dangerous. This analysis applies to Old Mission’s proper boundaries only. See the table on nearby places below for nearby cities.

The rate of crime in Old Mission is 19.31 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. People who live in Old Mission generally consider the southwest part of the city to be the safest.

Your chance of being a victim of crime in Old Mission may be as high as 1 in 31 in the northeast neighborhoods, or as low as 1 in 74 in the southwest part of the city. See the section on interpreting the crime map, however, because comparing rates for crime or any other crime is not as intuitive as it may seem.

I’m not sure when the Old Mission Peninsula came to be known as a “rich” community, but I guess it’s when this little strip of land began to shift from being a farming community to a resort and retirement community.

But aren’t we still a farming community? And haven’t we always been a resort community? And where do all the year-round locals fit in? Let’s dive into it.

Dating back to the 1800s, the Old Mission Peninsula has always had pockets of “old money” resorts, from the Neahtawanta Association (once known as the Universalist Resort Association) to the Old Mission Resort on Forest Avenue to the Illini Resort off the north end of Peninsula Drive. And we’ve always been a vacation destination, with large passenger ships bringing visitors north from Chicago and depositing them at the Haserot Beach dock, where they’d travel the short distance to the Old Mission Inn for summer respite away from the city.
